They\u2019ll delete most within a second of reading the subject line. First, though, let\u2019s get inside the mind of your target audience.<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"h.aciyaze5xpzy\"><strong>1) Understand t<\/strong><strong>he Psychology of the Prospect<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Many salespeople dive right into e-mail marketing without first taking the time to really <a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlegrain.com\/blog-posts\/content-marketing\/10-psychological-hacks-to-improve-your-content-marketing\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-lasso-id=\"21618\">get inside the minds of their customers<\/a>. They immediately focus on blasting out a huge volume of e-mails, hoping that a few people will somehow respond.<\/p>\n<p>This is the main reason why most cold e-mails come off as spammy and are instantly deleted.<\/p>\n<p>Sometimes it\u2019s helpful to know what <em>not<\/em>\u00a0to do \u2013 Below I\u2019ve created an amalgamation of the bad emails I\u2019ve received over the years.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019ll kick this off with a templated outline they tend to follow and explain why they do those things. Then I\u2019ll actually write one according to this template and explain (in blue) why it <em>doesn\u2019t<\/em>\u00a0work.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #333333;\">Bad email template:<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Introduction: <\/strong>Because we\u2019ve all been trained to think that introducing yourself is the polite thing to do.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Generic ice breaker\/interest builder: <\/strong>Breaking the ice and\/or building interest can work, but only when it\u2019s targeted and relevant.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Pitch your product\/service: <\/strong>Because you\u2019re trying to sell to them, right? Let\u2019s just hope your icebreaker has grabbed their attention.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Soft CTA\/hard CTA: <\/strong>Because all good emails end with an actual ask and specific action, right?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Now let\u2019s see why this doesn\u2019t work (with my comments in blue):<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">Hi [PROSPECT],<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">My name is [NAME] and I work for [COMPANY].<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><em>Good for you. But I\u2019ve got deadlines to hit. So far I see no benefit for me in this so my eyes are already glazing over.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">I noticed you\u2019ve recently secured funding and wanted to congratulate you on your success.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><em>I now know this is a generic email blast. It\u2019s just specific enough to be relevant, but nowhere near enough to be useful for me. It shows me this is a mass email and thus the sender doesn\u2019t really care and isn\u2019t sincere. If they hadn\u2019t lost me already, they have now. <\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">Our industry-leading solution helps brands like [PROSPECT\u2019S COMPANY] achieve up to a 65% conversion rate through better cold email outreach. If not, I\u2019d really appreciate it if you could forward this to the person who\u2019s best suited to help out.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">Alternatively, feel free to book a time slot so we can jump on the phone and discuss a potential collaboration here.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><em>They\u2019ve basically admitted that they haven\u2019t done their research, since they don\u2019t even know if I\u2019m the right person. Then they ask me to jump on the phone!?<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Do you see why this doesn\u2019t work? E-mails like this aren\u2019t just low converting \u2014 they\u2019re annoying. They show an obvious lack of research, demonstrate zero empathy for the user, and are honestly a bit selfish.<\/p>\n<p>When reading cold emails I always like to switch up the situation and imagine that someone\u2019s trying to get a person\u2019s phone number in a bar.<\/p>\n<p>In the above example, you\u2019ve basically walked up to a stranger, told\u00a0them your name and said what a great person you are. Then you\u2019ve proceeded to say \u201cif you\u2019re not interested, maybe forward me on to one of your friends?\u201d before asking for their number.<\/p>\n<p>That would <em>never<\/em>\u00a0work, right?<\/p>\n<p>So here are a few key things to remember about the psychology of readers before sending an e-mail.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Dive Deeper: <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlegrain.com\/blog-posts\/content-marketing\/10-psychological-hacks-to-improve-your-content-marketing\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-lasso-id=\"21619\">10 Psychological Hacks to Improve Your Content Marketing<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"h.7a2trykb0qk3\"><strong><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">Sell to the Emotional Human, not the Logical Corporation<\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\n<p id=\"h.oza6iu9mngrl\">Many cold e-mails fall flat because they don\u2019t take into account the fact that they\u2019re selling to <em>individuals <\/em>first, not corporations.<\/p>\n<p id=\"h.haehn58xv310\">Sometimes we forget that the person at the other end of the e-mail is just like us \u2014 with the same range of emotions, hopes and fears. It might seem like we\u2019re selling to companies that make logical, formal decisions about what products they buy, but in reality those decisions are heavily influenced by the <em>emotions<\/em>\u00a0of the people making those decisions.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s a well-known fact that people buy with emotion, then justify it afterwards with logic. In fact, a Harvard Business School professor says that <a href=\"http:\/\/customerthink.com\/neuroscience-confirms-we-buy-on-emotion-justify-with-logic-yet-we-sell-to-mr-rational-ignore-mr-intuitive\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-lasso-id=\"21620\">95% of our purchase decision-making<\/a>\u00a0takes place subconsciously!<\/p>\n<p>Years ago I worked with an incredibly successful consultant ($10,000,000+ per year). He made a great point about there being no such thing as business problems. Rather, people\u2019s personal and professional problems are interlinked:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Can\u2019t hit that deadline? Gonna have a sleepless night.<\/li>\n<li>Revenue down? Experience constant anxiety over staff paychecks and making your own rent.<\/li>\n<li>Landed that big deal? Feel great for the next 72 hours.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The same thing applies to cold e-mails. For example, you should explain in your e-mail why your product or service benefits the recipient <em>personally<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>You can\u2019t say it will help them sleep easier, but you can highlight how it will personally affect them at work. They\u2019ll usually make that final connection themselves.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Company Problem \u00a0= Sales team underperforming <\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>V<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Sales Manager Solution = Need to increase team productivity<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>V<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Personal Solution = Less anxiety \/ get that raise \/ build their reputation<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The customer is aware of the first and third problem and potential benefit. Your job is to highlight the specific solution for their role because obviously they haven\u2019t found it yet (if they had, they wouldn\u2019t need you).<\/p>\n<p>Highlight the solution for their problem, and they\u2019ll fill in the gaps.<\/p>\n<p>Here are a few examples\u00a0of ideas in the form of subject lines that should help people make those connections:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>\u201cWhat [ANOTHER OF YOUR CLIENTS] did to secure their promotion to sales team manager\u201d<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>\u201cHow [INDIRECT COMPETITOR] increased sales team productivity by 123%\u201d<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>You\u2019ve got to get into the head of your recipients, figure out the issue that\u2019s bothering them, and tailor your email to their specific needs.<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s an e-mail that\u2019s personalized\u00a0to the prospect and offers instant value:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"648\" height=\"384\" class=\"wp-image-24384 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.singlegrain.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/pasted-image-0-110.png\" alt=\"pasted image 0 110\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Let\u2019s imagine that the recipient is a content manager at a large company. You know from your research that the biggest problem people in these positions face is generating tangible business returns from their content marketing efforts. Here\u2019s an example email you could send:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><strong>Subject line: <\/strong><em>Something I noticed on the [COMPANY] blog<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><em>Hey [NAME], <\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><em>I noticed a little something that could help you increase the conversions from the [COMPANY] blog. <\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><em>If you take a look at this article (&lt;&#8211; hyperlink this), you\u2019ll see that there are three areas where customer intent to download your e-book on [TOPIC] would be really high:<\/em><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul>\n<li><em>Area 1<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>Area 2<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>Area 3<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><em>I\u2019ve helped [INDIRECT COMPETITOR] implement a similar tactic across their blog and it\u2019s led to a 247% increase in new leads. <\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><em>If you\u2019d like to chat about a few other areas it could work for [COMPANY], let me know and I\u2019ll clear 30 mins to jump on the phone. <\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><em>Thanks!<\/em><\/p>\n<p>This email shows that you understand the problem\u00a0they are facing. It also offers something of value to them, which is going to make you stand out from the hundreds of other hard sells they get.<\/p>\n<div class=\"sg-content-upgrade-banner\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlegrain.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/6-Cold-Email-Case-Studies-Ebook.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"sg-content-upgrade--cta\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.singlegrain.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/Lead-Magnets-Emailing-g.jpg\" alt=\"Click here to download it for free right now!\" class=\"sg-content-upgrade-banner aligncenter\"><\/a><\/div>\n<h3><strong><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">Send Your E-mail at the Right Time<\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>The exact open-rate numbers for specific times vary, of course, but overall, you want to catch your prospects when they are fresh-minded and in work mode, which usually means first thing in the morning or in the early evening.<\/p>\n<p>Emailing between 5-6 a.m. could get you an open rate of 37% and a response rate of 8%. <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.prospect.io\/cold-email-stats-2018\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-lasso-id=\"21621\">E-mailing your prospects between 7-9 p.m.<\/a>\u00a0could help you achieve an open rate of 48% and response rate of 8%:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"311\" class=\"wp-image-24396 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.singlegrain.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/pasted-image-0-118.png\" alt=\"pasted image 0 118\" \/><\/p>\n<p>And according to 14 studies curated by CoSchedule, the <a href=\"https:\/\/coschedule.com\/blog\/best-time-to-send-email\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-lasso-id=\"21622\">best days to send e-mails<\/a>\u00a0is Tuesday, Thursday and Wednesday (in that order):<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"701\" height=\"450\" class=\"wp-image-24385 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.singlegrain.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/Best-day-to-send-email.png\" alt=\"Best day to send email\" \/><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"h.azgqmnh100ez\"><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\"><strong>Understand Your Prospects\u2019 Workflow<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Whenever we send out an e-mail asking people to sign up for a demo or get on a sales call, it\u2019s usually at the center of <em>our<\/em>\u00a0attention. It\u2019s one of the most important things we focus on all day. But to the average prospect, your e-mail is just a small blip in their day. They have other, more pressing, problems to worry about.<\/p>\n<p>If\u00a0you\u2019re a busy VP of sales, you\u2019re dealing with a million things during your day, and reading a cold e-mail is not on the top of your list. Now try to imagine what sort of message would make you want to respond and get on a call with the salesperson?<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s important to understand the workflow that your prospects go through in a typical day and try to make your e-mail fit within that workflow. For a prospect who\u2019s having a tough day, a bad cold e-mail could make them even more agitated.<\/p>\n<p>But a good e-mail will help you earn their respect, which would likely lead to a response. You have to walk a fine line between telling them about your product and keeping it general enough to evoke curiosity. The <a href=\"http:\/\/blog.hubspot.com\/sales\/sales-email-subject-lines-that-get-prospects-to-open-read-and-respond#sm.0001xqvibtu41co8usl2r830k3y4s\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-lasso-id=\"21628\">best e-mail subject lines<\/a>\u00a0are creative, interest-provoking and informative without giving too much away.<\/p>\n<p>Here a few examples of subject lines that work well:<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"h.oxx41yhhepbq\"><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\"><strong>1) Quick Question<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Asking a \u201cquick question\u201d\u00a0is a great way to invoke curiosity. According to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cmu.edu\/dietrich\/sds\/docs\/loewenstein\/PsychofCuriosity.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-lasso-id=\"21629\">American Psychological Association<\/a>, people find this kind of uncertainty very unsettling. It just keeps nagging at them until they open the e-mail to see what your quick question is. And because you wrote \u201cquick question,\u201d they know it\u2019s not going to be ten pages long (so don\u2019t make it ten pages long!).<\/p>\n<p>Here are a few \u201cquick question\u201d subject lines I\u2019ve used to great effect in the past (often around a 40-50% open rate \u2013 much higher than the average):<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Quick question for you [NAME]<\/li>\n<li>Quick question about [COMPANY]\u2019s [PROCESS\/STRATEGY]<\/li>\n<li>I\u2019d love to get your opinion on this, [NAME]<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Note how they\u2019re really short, get to the point, but are still intriguing.<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s an example email I\u2019ve actually used which works really well. I\u2019ve amended the copy to be a potential for an agency who helps lead generation for brands with PPC.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><strong>Subject line:<\/strong>\u00a0<em>Quick question for you, [NAME]<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><em>Hey [NAME],<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><em>I stumbled across the [COMPANY] site and noticed you guys are using multi-step landing pages for your opt-ins. <\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><em>Was hoping you could spare 30 seconds just to let me know how it\u2019s working for you guys.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><em>I work with [YOUR OWN COMPANY] and we\u2019ve generally seen multi-step pages work well for PPC ads, but yours are a little different. <\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><em>In particular, you\u2019re running them with almost double the fields we do and I was just wondering how it\u2019s affecting conversions. <\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><em>I understand you\u2019re busy, so if you don\u2019t have time to respond, no worries. <\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><em>Thanks for your time!<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><em>Signature<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Notice how there\u2019s no sell in that email. I ask about something relevant to the company and the service being sold. But more than anything, I\u2019m just trying to get a response to open a dialogue.<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"h.ittpjtfvly52\"><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\"><strong>2) <\/strong><strong>X Tips for [Company] for [Pain Point]<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>People love numbered lists. We already know how successful they are in blog post headlines. <a href=\"https:\/\/coschedule.com\/blog\/types-of-blog-posts\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-lasso-id=\"21630\">List posts<\/a>\u00a0are among the most commonly read and shared blog posts of all.<\/p>\n<p>According to CoSchedule, the reasons for this are that they:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Attract audience attention by their obscure number<\/li>\n<li>Show your expertise<\/li>\n<li>Are immensely actionable for your audience as they read your content<\/li>\n<li>Are super informative<\/li>\n<li>Are easy to read and scan for the big takeaways<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The same principles apply to cold e-mails, too. If your prospect is busy with work and has a crowded inbox with a million things demanding their attention, then they\u2019d be more likely to open a list-style e-mail because they would expect to be able to skim it easily.<\/p>\n<p>Here are a few potential subject lines for a list:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>5 steps [BRAND] took to [ACHIEVE GOAL]<\/li>\n<li>The 3 things every good [JOB ROLE] needs to know<\/li>\n<li>7-point checklist to finding the best hire<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 id=\"h.z3uywji8l6ie\"><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\"><strong>3) \u201cCongrats on [Specific Result]!\u201d<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>You can congratulate your prospects on a great quarter, press coverage, new product or feature release, raising financing and more \u2013 depending on what feels appropriate.<\/p>\n<p>Most people send these types of \u201ccongratulations\u201d in the body of the e-mail. This can work, but the more value you can add in the subject line itself, the more likely that your e-mail will get read.<\/p>\n<p>Just be sure that, whatever it is you\u2019re congratulating them for, you personalize the email to reflect their company specifically.<\/p>\n<p>Here are some example subject lines:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Congrats on [ACHIEVEMENT], [NAME]!<\/li>\n<li>What\u2019s the next step after [ACHIEVEMENT]?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 id=\"h.y8qbc0axqsd1\"><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\"><strong>4) Praise-Related Subject Lines<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Everybody loves to be recognized and appreciated for what they do. If you\u2019re reaching out to a thought leader in your industry, try tailoring your subject line to praise that person.<\/p>\n<p>For example, you could say something like \u201cI\u2019ve heard about your skills in XYZ field and I thought I\u2019d get in touch\u201d or \u201cI\u2019ve been following your blog for a while.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Here are some example subject lines:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>It\u2019s great to finally connect with [SOMETHING SPECIFIC TO THEM]<\/li>\n<li>I\u2019d love your expert opinion on this, [NAME]<\/li>\n<li>I loved your [ACHIEVEMENT\/NOTABLE ACTION], [NAME]<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Here\u2019s how that last one might play out in an email:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><em>Hey [NAME], <\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><em>Just wanted to say I loved the work you did on the [CAMPAIGN]. That has to be one of the best examples of [STRATEGY] I\u2019ve ever seen. <\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><em>What gave you the inspiration for it? I work in a similar field and we\u2019ve had some great results in [YOUR SERVICE] and your campaign is really innovative. <\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><em>Thanks for the inspiration and keep on keeping on!<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><em>Signature<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Again, I\u2019m not trying to click bait them into opening the email. A lot of people send something like this and then quickly switch to a generic pitch, which is only going to annoy them.<\/p>\n<p>If you are praising someone, be sincere. Look at this as a way to learn about what they do and a way to open a dialogue. If the sender\u2019s name doesn\u2019t sound like someone you want to hear from, it doesn\u2019t matter what your subject line is \u2013 people won\u2019t open the e-mail.<\/p>\n<p>For example, you should <em>never<\/em>\u00a0use generic company email addresses, like <em>noreply@company.com<\/em>\u00a0or <em>sales@company.com<\/em>. Apart from making you sound like a robot, people are generally not going to reply to those e-mails or add them to their contacts \u2013 which reduces the chances of your e-mails showing up in their \u201cprimary\u201d inbox.<\/p>\n<p>Instead, you can include a person\u2019s name <em>and <\/em>company as your \u201csender name.\u201d When we send emails from \u201cEric Siu, Single Grain\u201d we get a much higher click-through and open rate compared to e-mails sent from just \u201cSingle Grain.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"h.z9ixx4jlny3f\"><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\"><strong>6) Create Urgency<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Subject lines that have a sense of urgency have a better chance of being opened. Here are some examples from Digital Marketer\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.leadquizzes.com\/5-email-subject-line-formulas-to-skyrocket-open-rates-55-examples\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-lasso-id=\"21632\">e-mail subject lines with sky-high open rates<\/a>:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>[Last Call] For the Ultimate Email Marketing Game Plan (PDF)<\/li>\n<li>[Last Chance] 75% Off all Our Execution Plans Ends TOMORROW!<\/li>\n<li>CLOSING down soon! (Don\u2019t get locked out!)<\/li>\n<li>There is still time\u2026.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>One of the biggest barriers that stop people from moving down your sales funnel is procrastination. Surprisingly, subject lines that are between 98-111 characters long have a 54% open rate (based on a <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.prospect.io\/cold-email-stats-2018\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-lasso-id=\"21634\">study conducted by Prospect.io<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"768\" height=\"288\" class=\"wp-image-24399 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.singlegrain.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/pasted-image-0-119.png\" alt=\"pasted image 0 119\" \/><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"h.z4fgdn2my5kl\"><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\"><strong>8) Pay Attention to Your First Sentence<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>The first sentence of your e-mail is super important. In addition to your subject line\u00a0and sender name, prospects also see a <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.hubspot.com\/hs-fs\/hubfs\/email-preview-text-in-inbox.png?width=730&amp;height=57&amp;name=email-preview-text-in-inbox.png\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-lasso-id=\"21635\">preview of your e-mail<\/a>\u00a0in their inbox (most e-mail clients, that is, like Gmail, the iPhone e-mail app and Outlook):<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"975\" height=\"78\" class=\"wp-image-24398 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.singlegrain.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/How-to-Get-More1.png\" alt=\"How to Get More1\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Also, be aware that some e-mail service providers allow you to create a specific message for this preview. It\u2019ll be listed under the meta tag option. If your email service provider does offer this, use it. It\u2019s more flexible than having to tailor your opening line for this specific approach.<\/p>\n<p>This can also be a great opportunity to hook your audience with urgency or praise. Just try to tie it in with the subject line you\u2019ve run with. Make it a logical next step and not just a cheap promo slot.<\/p>\n<p>Examples of some eye-catching subject lines and opening sentences in the body of your email:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Quick question about [COMPANY]\u2019s [PROCESS]: <\/strong>Your sales process is incredible! I\u2019d love to know how you optimized it.<\/li>\n<li><strong>7-point checklist to finding the best hire: <\/strong>Hey [NAME], these tips will save you a ton of time, effort and money!<\/li>\n<li><strong>[Last Call] For the Ultimate Email Marketing Game Plan (PDF): <\/strong>This offer will never be run again so take advantage of it now!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 id=\"h.9qehl934fbah\"><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\"><strong>9<\/strong><strong>) Test Your Subject Lines<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Apart from A\/B testing, there are other ways to test whether your subject line will lead to increased open rates or not.<\/p>\n<p>Depending on your e-mail client, you might be able to leverage the help of a \u201csubject line analyzer.\u201d For example, <a href=\"http:\/\/kb.mailchimp.com\/campaigns\/previews-and-tests\/best-practices-for-email-subject-lines\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-lasso-id=\"21636\">MailChimp has a subject line research tool<\/a>\u00a0that allows you to compare your subject line phrase to all others that have been sent through MailChimp. A cold email is not the place to outline all the features and benefits of your service; it\u2019s to get that first \u201cyes\u201d. You\u2019re really only looking for a response so that they\u2019re more receptive to your follow up.<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"h.cqk3tna9cqew\"><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\"><strong>2) Ditch the Elevator Pitch<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><em>We\u2019re a successful multinational brand that has helped a myriad of businesses such as&#8230;<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Yawn.<\/p>\n<p>If there\u2019s one thing that no one likes receiving it\u2019s pitch emails. Writing your email as if it\u2019s a pitch is a surefire way to get it deleted. I\u2019m not saying you can\u2019t pitch, just don\u2019t lead with it. Anderson<\/a>\u00a0obsession or adore trashy romance novels. Or maybe they play adult recreational league baseball on the weekends.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s easy to see high-powered people as nothing but Mr. or Mrs. Business. Boring people who have no life and spend all day thinking about key metrics and goals. But really, they\u2019re just people like you and me.<\/p>\n<p>A little levity, humor and personality can go a long way. Don\u2019t believe me? The millions of views on YouTube are proof enough without me throwing my 2 cents in.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><em>But here\u2019s the thing I\u2019m a little confused about. You mention that [STRATEGY] is a great way to increase [METRIC]. And I agree. <\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><em>But where do you go from there? We\u2019ve been running tests on [STRATEGY 2] and seen some great results with our clients.
